One of the most asked questions by people when they call to talk about a Wabi fixed gear bike, is about climbing hills. How can you handle any kind of hill with only 1 gear ratio?? OK, one caveat- no question the engine is the main thing here, you have to have some level of cycling fitness. But the good news is that you'll get fit more quickly on a fixed! Anyway, if you don't have a choice of gears to use, what do you do? You simply pedal. You'll be very surprised what the combination of a light, responsive frame and wheel set, combined with no option to downshift, will do. You'll be climbing hills that, on paper, may have not seemed possible, often times faster than if you had gears. For one, you alter your pedalling style to deal with the one gear and the terrain Check out the ankling video to the right for another hill technique), but for another, given the same ratio, a fixed climbs better than a freewheel. Unless you're dealing with long, steep grades, you'll find a fixed will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. And you won't be constantly wondering "am I in the right gear", and looking around for that right gear. You can just concentrate on the ride, which is one of the great things about a fixed- you simply ride.
